President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on Naitasiri paramount chief, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, to take action against the rising illicit drug issue affecting the community. During the opening of the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held at Tamavua Village in Suva yesterday, he voiced his worries regarding the surge in drug use across the nation.
Ratu Wiliame emphasized the importance of collaboration among the community, youth, and traditional leadership to tackle the social problems plaguing society. He expressed concern for the negative impacts of drugs on the youth and the need for collective efforts to safeguard future generations.
He urged the reinforcement of cultural values and respect for elders within families and the broader community. The President also pointed out that individuals who have left school should be motivated to attend technical schools to help address social challenges and aid community progression.
“As a community, we must take responsibility and not assign blame to others,” stated Ratu Wiliame. He advocated for a comprehensive village profiling initiative, which would enable the government to provide tailored support to the people of Naitasiri.
In addition, he encouraged residents to combat Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by embracing healthier eating habits. Ratu Wiliame highlighted that 80 percent of deaths are linked to NCDs, urging the province to consider what actions can be taken to confront this issue. He inspired the community to reflect on traditional lifestyles and promote the consumption of home-grown food.
