Howard Politini, a representative of the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation’s Employment Relations Advisory Board, highlighted the importance of promptly addressing employee grievances during a recent insights session held at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel in Lautoka. His remarks were directed at employers, emphasizing that unresolved issues could lead to an increased involvement of unions.
This session was organized as a preparation for the Ministry of Employment’s public consultations concerning the Employment Relations Act (ERA) 2007 and the forthcoming Work Care Bill (WCB) 2024, scheduled for January 13 to 15. Participants were provided with a comprehensive overview of the ERA and WCB, along with guidance on how to engage effectively in the upcoming public consultations.
Politini stated, “Every employer here wants to take care of their people,” emphasizing the significance of a strong worker-employer relationship over reliance on third-party union interventions. He pointed out that immediate attention to grievances prevents escalation, asserting, “Employers need to act swiftly to resolve issues as they arise.”
Politini’s advice aligns with a broader discussion on labor relations in Fiji, with various business leaders, including tourism head Fantasha Lockington, expressing concerns regarding the lack of transparency in the legislative process for employment laws.
