Tabuya’s Dismissal: A Web of Controversies Unraveled?

Spread the love

Following the recent dismissal of Lynda Tabuya from her role as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has praised the Prime Minister for his decisive actions. However, Seruiratu expressed significant concerns regarding possible criminal implications and a potential cover-up relating to both Tabuya and the Commissioner of FICAC, Barbara Malimali.

Seruiratu highlighted discrepancies in Tabuya’s declarations about her marital status. While Tabuya previously claimed to be divorced from Robert Semaan since 2016—thereby not needing to declare his assets—recent evidence suggests they may still be married. This contradiction raises critical questions about her honesty, transparency, and integrity, qualities that are essential for any public servant.

Further complicating matters, a private video involving Tabuya has surfaced. Although she has described the video as a private issue between her and her husband, it contradicts her earlier claims of divorce, further undermining her credibility and the public trust in her leadership.

Seruiratu noted that Tabuya’s position as Co-Chair of the National Taskforce to Address Pornography in Fiji is significantly compromised because it requires adherence to strict codes of conduct regarding integrity on such sensitive issues. He expressed that her actions not only tarnish her reputation but also jeopardize the mission of the taskforce aimed at combating pornography and safeguarding children from online exploitation.

Additionally, concerns were raised about FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali, particularly regarding her decision to close the case based on potentially misleading information. Seruiratu insisted on the need for an investigation to discern whether Tabuya exerted undue influence over Malimali in relation to this investigation.

Seruiratu called for clarity on key questions: Is Tabuya married or not? And if she is still married, did she play a role in influencing the closure of the investigation into her marital status and asset declarations? He emphasized that Tabuya’s actions have not only discredited her former office but also eroded public confidence in the Ministry for Women, Children, and Social Protection.

In conclusion, Seruiratu asserted that public officials must exemplify high standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability. He pledged to bring this matter to Parliament to ensure it receives the serious attention it warrants, asserting that the Fijian people deserve honest and accountable leadership.

In light of these developments, there is hope for transparency through investigation, which could ultimately restore public trust in governmental institutions. By addressing these issues swiftly and responsibly, there is potential for a stronger commitment to integrity among public officials in Fiji.
