Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, has officially endorsed Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Speaker of the House, as the next President of Fiji. In her statement, Ms. Tabuya commended Ratu Naiqama’s leadership and his advocacy for increased representation of women in leadership roles.

She highlighted her experiences working with him in various capacities, including as Opposition Whip and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, noting his capable and impartial leadership. Ms. Tabuya expressed that she has always felt like an equal partner in the decision-making process during his tenure.

“The Tui Cakau consistently created opportunities for me to represent women, allowing me to assert my rightful place at the decision-making table,” she remarked. “To combat the persistent influence of patriarchy, it’s essential for women to have male allies supporting gender equality, and I confidently proclaim that the honorable Speaker embodies this role. I believe he will carry this commitment to the State House as the next President of the Republic of Fiji.”

Ratu Naiqama has accepted the nomination from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, taking over from Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, who withdrew his nomination earlier this week. The parliamentary vote to select the next President is scheduled for October 31.
