Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, has officially backed Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu as the candidate for President of Fiji. In her statement, Ms. Tabuya commended the leadership demonstrated by the Tui Cakau, particularly his advocacy for increasing the presence of women in leadership roles.

She highlighted her experiences working with Lalabalavu during his time as Leader of the Opposition and subsequently as Speaker of Parliament, noting his fairness and dedication to gender equality. “As a woman leader, I felt fully included and respected in decision-making processes,” she stated, emphasizing that Lalabalavu consistently facilitated her visibility as a leader.

Ms. Tabuya acknowledged the need for male allies in the movement towards gender equality and expressed her confidence that Lalabalavu would serve as a champion for these values if elected President. Ratu Naiqama accepted the nomination from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and will take over from Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, who recently withdrew his candidacy.

The election for the next President of Fiji is scheduled for October 31.
