Swinging Into the Future: Growing Golf’s Appeal Among Fiji’s Youth

Fostering a greater interest in golf among Fiji’s youth is viewed as a way to enhance the sport’s visibility both locally and throughout the Pacific region. Shaun Hwang, the vice-president of the Fiji Golf Club, expressed this viewpoint during an event held at the club in Vatuwaqa, Suva.

Hwang emphasized the importance of engaging young people in sports, stating, “We need sports in the young generation. In the Pacific, we need the young people and the younger generation to join.” He also pointed out that aspiring golfers could draw inspiration from famous figures in the sport, such as Fijian-born Vijay Singh, who was once the world number one golfer.

“We have a successful golf player like Vijay Singh, and we have to develop on where to go,” Hwang noted. Having played golf for a decade and residing in Fiji for 28 years, he often visits the club on weekends to play with fellow golfers.

In related news, the Stableford Event competition, sponsored by Nagel Goundan, kicked off yesterday with 60 participants. The tournament will continue to take place every weekend. Although the weather was overcast at first, it cleared up as golf enthusiasts gathered at the Vatuwaqa golf club to take part in the event.
