Sugarcane farmers in Fiji are set to gain access to affordable healthcare through the newly introduced Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program. This initiative, launched by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad at the opening of a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) chamber at the Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi, aims to offer discounted healthcare services to over 10,500 active cane growers.
Professor Prasad emphasized this program as a manifestation of the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare access for the sugar farming community, particularly those residing in rural areas. He stated, “This partnership with PSH ensures that farmers have access to affordable healthcare and demonstrates our commitment to improving health services.” The initiative not only addresses immediate healthcare needs but also aligns with broader efforts to modernize healthcare infrastructure in Fiji, which include significant projects such as a new 100-bed super-specialty hospital funded by the Indian Government.
Parvish Kumar, the CEO of PSH, highlighted the program’s potential to elevate the overall well-being of sugarcane farmers. By leveraging the collective buying power of the farming community, the program seeks to provide quality medical services at reduced rates, ensuring that farmers are adequately rewarded for their hard work. Additionally, plans are underway to extend healthcare access to farmers in Labasa as part of outreach efforts that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
In summary, the SCGF Loyalty Program represents a hopeful stride towards bolstering the health and economic viability of Fiji’s sugarcane farmers. By facilitating access to affordable healthcare, the government and PSH are taking proactive steps to support the agricultural sector, reinforcing its vital contribution to Fiji’s economy. This partnership not only highlights the importance of accessible healthcare for sustaining agricultural productivity but also aims to improve the living standards of those who play a critical role in nourishing the nation.
