The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry has announced the distribution of 12 sugarcane planters and 16 fertilizer applicators to tractor service providers in Fiji’s sugarcane sector. This initiative was highlighted by Minister Charan Jeath Singh during a recent handover ceremony for the New Farmers and Lease Premium Grant, along with the Farm Mechanisation Grant, held in Lautoka.

Minister Singh emphasized that these essential tools are designed to assist farmers in improving their efficiency in planting and fertilizing, which will ultimately reduce manual labor and enhance overall productivity. The government’s Farm Mechanisation Grant includes a significant 50% subsidy on the equipment, making it more accessible for tractor service providers. In exchange, these providers are expected to offer their services at subsidized rates to farmers, particularly for cane planting and fertilization tasks.

Highlighting the collaborative efforts between the government and the private sector, Singh noted that this mechanisation program is a critical part of a broader strategy aimed at modernizing the sugar industry, reducing production costs, and improving crop yields. He reiterated the commitment to ensuring that all farmers, regardless of their financial resources, can access modern farming techniques.

This initiative not only addresses current challenges within the sugarcane industry, such as labor shortages and rising production costs, but also positions the sector for future sustainability and competitiveness. By equipping farmers with advanced tools and techniques, the government is paving the way for a thriving agricultural landscape in Fiji, fostering growth opportunities for both new and existing sugarcane producers.

Overall, this mechanisation effort is a positive development for Fiji’s sugar industry, demonstrating a proactive approach to nurturing a resilient agricultural sector while providing essential support to farmers. As the industry adapts to modern techniques, it can look forward to a more sustainable and prosperous future.
