The Ministry of Youth and Sports has recently undertaken a crucial initiative by profiling 140 youths living on the streets of Suva, including 40 women and eight children under the age of 10. This endeavor aims to identify vulnerable individuals and implement supportive measures to aid them. Minister Jese Saukuru led a significant meeting with teams from Social and Child Protection to strategize rehabilitation and diversion pathways for those identified in the profiling.

In addition to addressing immediate needs, plans are underway for a similar profiling exercise in the Western Division. A working group, comprising the Permanent Secretaries from both ministries, will oversee the effective implementation of these initiatives, ensuring a cohesive approach to supporting vulnerable youth across the nation.

During the meeting, insights were shared by organizations such as Inspire Pacific and Kauwai Home of the Salvation Army, whose recently completed rehabilitation program successfully assisted 17 youths and their families. Their successful model is being considered for scaling up to a national level, offering a promising framework for future rehabilitation efforts.

Community engagement is a vital aspect of this initiative. Notable musician Seru Serevi discussed his use of music as a medium for connecting with street dwellers, while rugby legend Seremaia Bai highlighted his impactful work with 500 children and youth through his rugby academy. Their contributions provide valuable perspectives on how to effectively engage and support at-risk young individuals.

Both ministries are committed to collaborating with existing programs and expanding similar initiatives throughout different divisions, focusing on a holistic and inclusive strategy to tackle the multifaceted challenges faced by vulnerable youth. This proactive approach not only addresses immediate needs but also represents a hopeful vision for the rehabilitation and empowerment of young individuals facing adversity in Fiji.
