Suva’s Hidden Hotspots: Tackling Illegal Activities in the City

The Suva City Council (SCC) has pinpointed locations in the city prone to illegal activities, notably parks and nighttime vendors. Special administrators chairman Tevita Boseiwaqa highlighted that the Museum Thurston Gardens Park has emerged as a prevalent site for activities such as drug use, loitering, and prostitution.

“Our officers have identified hotspots, particularly in parks like Thurston Gardens,” Mr. Boseiwaqa mentioned. He added that the council is collaborating with police to enhance security measures at night and is looking to improve safety around the Fiji Museum.

Mr. Boseiwaqa indicated plans to upgrade the park’s access points, install fencing, and add surveillance cameras and lighting. “The lack of a gate and surrounding fence allows easy access for individuals at all times,” he explained.

Additionally, the council suspects that some vendors and workers at food stalls may be operating illegal side businesses, including the unauthorized sale of liquor and drugs, and some have been providing delivery services. Taxi and minibus stands are also believed to be involved in such activities.

“This fiscal year, we are focusing on addressing these issues within the SCC. While it’s a challenging task, it can be managed to some extent with our available resources, including enforcement officers,” Mr. Boseiwaqa stated.
