Suva’s Heartbeat: A Miss Hibiscus Journey of Culture and Community

The rich cultural heritage and vibrant community of Suva have inspired Semantafa Naomi Lavulo-Samisoni to compete for the title of Miss Hibiscus 2024. Sponsored by the local fashion label Hefrani, the 27-year-old graphic designer is one of ten contestants seeking the prestigious crown at the festival’s 68th anniversary.

Semantafa has a deep affection for Suva, closely linked to her family’s history in the city. Although she lives in Nadi, Suva holds a special place in her heart, filled with cherished memories. Both her parents grew up in Suva, and her childhood holidays were often spent exploring the city’s lively atmosphere.

She recalls joyful times spent painting with her uncle, playing with her cousins, and engaging in various sports competitions, including swimming, hockey, squash, and paddling. Suva represented a hub of joy and family for her.

Memorable moments with her grandparents during card games and attending family gatherings at her uncle’s home stand out in her mind. “Suva always had something exciting happening,” she reminisced, noting her enjoyment of afternoon drives along the seawall, where she would marvel at beautiful sunsets while observing families exercising and children playing rugby and basketball.

The swimming pool at the aquatic center and the hockey turf nearby left a significant impact on her, as they contrasted with amenities in Nadi. Additionally, she shared that Rotuma Day is particularly meaningful to her, recalling the emotional experience of watching her family participate in traditional dances.

Her mother’s family, with Tongan and Chinese Fijian roots, has also contributed to the cultural depths of her visits to Suva. Semantafa’s first experience modeling at Fiji Fashion Week in Suva was transformative, instilling her with confidence and inspiring her through the artistic expressions, such as painting, dancing, singing, and tailoring, that are embraced by the Suva community.

“The sense of community and the rich culture of my family in Suva made me feel like I truly belonged. This city, with its constant activity and deep family ties, will always hold a special place in my heart,” she stated.

The Miss Hibiscus festival will be held at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Suva Civic Centre from August 31 to September 7, showcasing a celebration of tradition, culture, and community. This year’s event, featuring Gold Sponsors FMF and Vodafone, is anticipated to be a memorable occasion.
