The rich cultural heritage and lively community of Suva have inspired Semantafa Naomi Lavulo-Samisoni to compete for the title of Miss Hibiscus 2024. At 27 years old and a graphic designer by profession, she is one of ten contestants looking to earn this prestigious honor during the festival’s 68th anniversary, with support from the local fashion label Hefrani.
Semantafa’s connection to Suva is profound, rooted in her family’s history within the city. Although she currently lives in Nadi, Suva remains a beloved place filled with cherished memories from her childhood. Both of her parents grew up in Suva, and she spent many of her holidays there, surrounded by family.
She shares fond memories of painting with her uncle, playing with her cousins, and participating in various sports such as swimming, hockey, squash, and paddling competitions. For Semantafa, Suva was synonymous with joy, family, and constant activity. She recalls enjoying card games with her grandparents and attending family gatherings at her uncle’s home, where exciting events were always happening.
One of her treasured activities includes afternoon drives along the seawall, where she would admire the sunset and watch families exercising and children playing sports. The impressive aquatic center and hockey field in Suva left a significant impression on her, distinct from what she experienced in Nadi.
“Rotuma Day has a special significance for me,” Semantafa noted, reflecting on the emotional moments spent watching her family participate in traditional dances. Her mother’s family, with Tongan and Chinese Fijian roots, also contributed to the cultural vibrancy she feels during her visits.
Her journey into modeling began at Fiji Fashion Week in Suva, an experience that significantly boosted her confidence. Inspired by the trendsetting spirit of Suva’s residents, she appreciated their artistic expressions, whether through painting, dancing, singing, or tailoring.
“The sense of community and the rich culture of my family in Suva made me feel like I truly belonged. This city will always hold a special place in my heart, filled with activity and deep family connections,” she expressed.
The upcoming festival will take place at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Suva Civic Centre from August 31 to September 7, celebrating tradition, culture, and community. Sponsored by FMF and Vodafone, this year’s event is expected to be unforgettable.
