The Suva Western Bus Stand is set to undergo a significant transformation following the demolition of 23 bean cart stalls that have been in place for over 20 years. This initiative marks the start of a long-awaited upgrade aimed at modernizing the area and creating better business opportunities for vendors.
Stall owner Rakesh Kumar, who has been running a bean cart and juice stall for more than two decades, expressed his support for the changes after months of discussions with the Suva City Council (SCC). “We’ve been in negotiations for months, and they have assured us that our spots will remain after the rebuild. It’s time to let go of the old structures and embrace new, modern models that will help grow our businesses,” Kumar stated.
The SCC highlighted hygiene concerns and reports of illicit activities as primary motivations for this redevelopment. The new stalls will be designed with contemporary aesthetics, akin to those at the Suva Municipal Market, promising an enhanced business environment.
Long-time vendor Filisita Sameke, who has been in the trade for over ten years, also voiced her approval of the council’s proactive step. “For years, we worked in makeshift structures that were uncomfortable and inefficient. The council’s swift action will make our work easier and more appealing to customers,” Sameke remarked.
The updated stalls are anticipated to improve the overall atmosphere of the bus stand, creating a safer and more sanitary space for both vendors and customers. Developers have assured vendors that the reconstruction will be completed within two to three months, with minimal disruption to their operations. Currently, vendors pay up to $32.70 per week for their spaces, and many believe that this investment will be worthwhile.
This redevelopment not only promises a better working environment for vendors but also stands to enhance the experience for customers. It reflects a commitment to community improvement and a brighter future for local businesses in Suva.
In summary, the transformation of the Suva Western Bus Stand represents a significant advancement towards modernization and better business conditions for local vendors, demonstrating a positive collaboration between the community and the council. This initiative showcases how revitalization efforts can lead to improved economic opportunities while addressing health and safety concerns.
