Taxi operators in Suva played a crucial role in apprehending a man who attempted to steal a vehicle with two young children inside. The incident unfolded last night when a 28-year-old woman was involved in a minor collision on Victoria Parade. While waiting for police assistance and leaving her keys in the ignition, a man jumped into her car and drove off with her daughters in the backseat.

Quick action from the police followed as they alerted local taxi operators about the vehicle theft. Utilizing Radio Transmitters (RT), the information was disseminated among the network. The stolen vehicle was later sighted on Rewa Street, where the suspect temporarily stopped to let the girls out.

A vigilant taxi operator managed to intercept the vehicle, enabling police to respond promptly and detain the suspect. The man, however, resisted arrest and assaulted four police officers before being apprehended. Despite his defiance, he was taken into custody, and investigations are currently underway.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, commended the swift response of the taxi operators, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in crime prevention. He stated, “These taxi operators assisted the police in apprehending the culprit, demonstrating the power of working together to prevent crime.”

To express their gratitude, the Totogo Police Station will be visiting the taxi drivers today to acknowledge their quick thinking and support in resolving the dangerous situation.

This incident highlights the vital role that community members can play in enhancing public safety. The collaboration between the police and local taxi operators serves as an encouraging example of how citizens can unite to combat crime and protect one another.

Overall, their response not only saved the children but also showcased the community’s commitment to safeguarding its members.
