The Suva Rugby Union is set to enhance its 2025 Skipper Cup campaign significantly, thanks to the Suva City Council’s approval for the use of part of Karsanji Bhindi Park – Bhindi Industrial for their weekly competitions. SRU chairman Viliame Draunibaka expressed that even though formal arrangements are still being finalized, this development is a momentous occasion for rugby enthusiasts in Suva and the surrounding urban settlements.
Draunibaka extended his gratitude to the Suva City Council for acknowledging the union’s pressing need for more sports facilities. Improved infrastructure will enable local communities and sports teams to engage in healthy competitions in optimal playing conditions.
With over a century of history, the Suva Rugby Union has played a pivotal role in the community, providing opportunities for many young men and women to join club and community teams. Draunibaka emphasized that this engagement fosters healthy lifestyles and keeps youth positively occupied, steering them away from crime and substance abuse.
He highlighted that the SRU has been instrumental in identifying talent, allowing many players to rise to esteemed teams like the Fijian Drua and the Flying Fijians. The union has also helped players secure contracts abroad and pursue careers in the Military, Police, and Corrections services.
This new development is poised to bolster the SRU’s efforts in nurturing talent and building community spirit through rugby, reinforcing the sport’s vital role in local culture and society.
In summary, the approval for the new playing facility represents a hopeful step forward for the Suva Rugby Union and its positive impact on the community, setting the stage for many more aspiring athletes to thrive in the sport.
