The Suva One athletics team is poised to defend its title in the Under 14 boys’ division at this weekend’s Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools athletics championship. Head coach Bill Momo shared insights about the team’s preparation during an interview with SUNsports.
Momo highlighted that their training has been consistent and well-structured, transitioning through various phases to ensure peak performance. Thanks to collaboration with stakeholders, including school heads, teachers, and parents, their organization and preparation have been robust.
The coach expressed a focus on addressing weaknesses identified from last year’s performance and aiming to not only retain the boys’ title but also contend for the girls’ division. Despite facing challenges from adverse weather, the team was able to adapt its training, changing venues as necessary to continue their preparations effectively.
Momo noted the impressive progress of the athletes, with targeted goals for performance metrics being established early in the training regimen. These efforts were recently validated during the Fiji athletics meet organized by Athletics Fiji.
He underscored the growing professionalism in Fijian athletics, attributing part of this development to the involvement of specialist coaches who have joined the program. Additionally, Momo commended ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing coach accreditation, particularly in rural and outer island areas.
With strong competition anticipated from other districts, Momo emphasized that their resolve is fueled by the encouragement of parents and guardians. He also expressed gratitude towards sponsors for their support, acknowledging the inclusivity of new participants who will experience competition for the first time.
The inclusion of the Wallis and Futuna athletics team is expected to elevate the competitive landscape, with Momo expressing his appreciation for their efforts to join the event. The championship is set to unfold at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on November 28 and 29.
This event not only fosters talent at a young age but also strengthens community ties and sportsmanship among various districts. The spirit of competition is alive, and the anticipation surrounding this championship promises exciting performances from all participants.
In summary, the Suva One athletics team is on a mission to defend their title amid promising preparation and growing support, setting the stage for an exhilarating competition in Fiji’s athletic landscape.
