The Suva One athletics team is gearing up to defend their Under 14 boys’ title at the Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools Athletics Championship, set to take place this weekend. Head coach Bill Momo shared insights into the team’s preparations during an interview with SUNsports.
Momo expressed confidence in their training, stating, “Our preparation has been on par with what we’re trying to do from general phase of preparation to competition.” As they enter the pre-competition phase, he acknowledged the vital support received from stakeholders, including school heads, teachers, and parents throughout their preparation.
In addition to defending their title in the boys’ division, Momo has his sights set on the girls’ division as well. He noted that adverse weather conditions posed challenges during training, but the team adapted by changing venues when necessary. He highlighted the intensity of their training and the targets set for performance metrics, which were assessed during a recent Fiji athletics meet.
Momo praised the advancements in athletics within Fiji, noting that the sport is becoming increasingly professionalized. He welcomed the inclusion of specialist coaches, which has enriched the team’s training experience. Furthermore, he mentioned ongoing programs by Athletics Fiji to improve coaching accreditation, especially in rural areas and outer islands.
The competition will be fierce, Momo acknowledged, as other districts are equally determined to win. He expressed gratitude for the support from parents and school leaders, emphasizing that the participation of students competing for the first time is a significant achievement in itself. He also extended his best wishes to all participating districts and welcomed the team from Wallis and Futuna, anticipating an exciting competition.
The championship will occur at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva from November 28 to 29, promising a thrilling showcase of talent and sportsmanship.
In summary, the Suva One athletics team is not only focused on defending their championship title but also nurturing the next generation of athletes while enhancing the sport’s profile in the region. The upcoming event represents a celebration of athletic talent, teamwork, and community support, which are essential to fostering a vibrant sports culture.
