The Suva One athletics team is gearing up to defend their title in the Under 14 boys’ division at the upcoming Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools athletics championship this weekend. Head coach Bill Momo shared insights into their preparations, emphasizing their focused approach as they transition into the pre-competition phase.
Momo expressed gratitude towards various stakeholders, including school heads, teachers, and parents, for their unwavering support throughout the training process. He highlighted the importance of addressing last year’s weaknesses and aiming not just for the boys’ title but also for success in the girls’ division.
Despite facing challenges posed by adverse weather conditions, the team has shown adaptability by changing training venues when necessary. Momo noted that the intense training sessions have helped set specific goals for performance metrics, which were evaluated during a recent athletics meet organized by Athletics Fiji.
Significant development in athletics in Fiji was underscored by Momo, who pointed out the inclusion of specialist coaches that enhance the training experience. He praised the ongoing efforts by Athletics Fiji to provide coaching accreditation opportunities for teachers, particularly in rural areas and outer islands, which fosters growth in the sport.
Momo anticipates tough competition from other districts, all seeking to secure victory and the precious gold medals. He acknowledged the support from parents and schools, which strengthens their preparation.
Interestingly, some students will experience their first athletics competition in Suva. Momo views this as a significant achievement in itself, wishing good luck to all participating districts. He also noted the addition of the Wallis and Futuna athletics team, which should elevate the competition level at the event.
The much-anticipated championship will take place at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva from November 28 to 29.
In summary, the Suva One athletics team is well-prepared and motivated to defend their title while also recognizing the broader growth of athletics in Fiji. The event promises to be a thrilling showcase of young talent and competitive spirit, highlighting the inclusive nature of sports development in the region.
