The National Disaster Management Office has set up three evacuation centers in the Central Division to accommodate residents affected by flooding in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku, Suva. According to a statement from NDMO, families have been relocated to St Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.

Residents living in flood-prone and low-lying areas within the Central Division are being urged to take precautions as heavy overnight rains have led to rising river levels and subsequent flooding.

The National Emergency Operation Centre has been partially activated, with NDMO collaborating with relevant authorities to monitor the situation. Intense rainfall has resulted in flooding across towns and communities, impacting minor roads and bridges.

NDMO has reported instances of landslides and traffic disruptions, urging the public in affected areas to avoid unnecessary travel. They emphasize that public safety is the top priority and advise anyone needing assistance to reach higher ground to contact the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority.

Residents are also advised to stay away from flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where water levels exceed knee height. This precaution is vital to ensure personal safety and to reduce life-threatening risks for both the public and first responders.

Additionally, floodwaters may contain harmful contaminants. The public is advised to limit contact with these waters and be aware of the potential health risks, including leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever, and diarrhea following heavy rainfall.
