The Suva City Council has approved a five percent salary increase for all its employees. This decision came after extensive consultations involving council members, the special administrator, and Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa.
Tevita Boseiwaqa, the SCC special administrator and acting chief executive officer, praised the hard work of the staff in maintaining the cleanliness of Suva city. He emphasized that their dedication warranted this acknowledgment, noting that the rigorous consultations included union representatives and department heads prior to making this decision.
The salary increase will benefit both established and unestablished employees and is part of a broader package that includes four enhancements for staff. Earlier, the council introduced a sick leave benefit before Christmas. The pay increases will be rolled out in stages: a two percent increase was issued on the last day of 2024, and an additional one percent will be distributed on January 28, with the final two percent set to be paid before April 17. Mr. Boseiwaqa expressed gratitude for the municipal workers who often spend considerable time away from their homes, stating that this increase aims to help them better balance work and family life.
In another significant update, as of December 31, 2024, the Suva City Council has regularized all acting positions held for more than six months. This change is part of a strategy to foster a healthier work environment and strong leadership. Mr. Boseiwaqa confirmed that positions below the CEO level will now be appointed on tenureship rather than contracts, though ongoing assessments will monitor their progress.
This initiative by the Suva City Council not only seeks to uplift the financial well-being of its employees but also aims to create a more stable and productive work environment, which could have positive long-term effects on the city’s operations and the community it serves. It reflects a commitment to valuing and supporting municipal staff, which is commendable and beneficial for both workers and residents alike.
