The Suva City Council has officially approved a five percent salary increase for all of its employees. This decision followed discussions among council members, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa.
Tevita Boseiwaqa, the acting chief executive officer and chairperson of the SCC, recognized the dedication of city workers in maintaining the cleanliness of Suva. He emphasized that this reward was important as it acknowledged their hard work in ensuring the city remains well-kept.
“We engaged in comprehensive consultations with all stakeholders, including the union, staff, and department heads, before making this significant decision,” stated Mr. Boseiwaqa. He noted that this salary increase applies to all employees, both established and unestablished, and is part of a broader initiative that includes multiple benefits for the workers. Previously, the council provided a sick leave benefit just before Christmas.
The pay increase will be distributed in stages, with an initial payout of two percent occurring on December 31, 2024, followed by an additional one percent scheduled for January 28, and the final two percent to be disbursed before April 17.
Mr. Boseiwaqa also highlighted the commitment of municipal workers who often spend time away from their families. He expressed that this pay increase is an effort to help employees achieve a better work-life balance.
In addition to salary increases, as of December 31, 2024, the SCC has regularized all acting positions within the council, particularly for those who have held their roles for more than six months. This aligns with a strategic goal to foster a positive work environment and effective leadership. Moving forward, positions below the CEO level will transition from contracts to tenured appointments, with regular assessments to ensure progress and performance.
This decision by the Suva City Council not only enhances the financial well-being of its workforce but also reinforces the importance of job security and the value of municipal employees, setting a positive example for other councils and organizations.
