The Suva City Council has announced a five percent salary increase for all its staff following consultations with council members, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa. Tevita Boseiwaqa, the acting chief executive officer of the SCC, emphasized the hard work of city employees who maintain cleanliness in Suva and noted that their efforts needed recognition.
Mr. Boseiwaqa explained that the decision comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance employee benefits. Alongside the salary increase, the council had previously introduced a sick leave benefit prior to Christmas. The salary increments will be distributed in stages, with the first two percent payout occurring on December 31, 2024, and subsequent payments of one percent on January 28 and another two percent by April 17.
An important aspect of this initiative is to support workers in balancing their professional and family lives, given the significant time many municipal workers dedicate away from home.
Additionally, as of the end of the year, all acting positions within the council have been regularized, particularly those held for over six months. This move aligns with SCC’s strategy to foster a healthy working environment and effective leadership, shifting roles below the CEO level from contracted positions to tenureship. Continuous assessments will be conducted to monitor progress in these positions.
