The Suva City Council (SCC) has announced a five percent salary increase for all staff members, a decision made following consultations with council members, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa. Tevita Boseiwaqa, the chairperson and acting chief executive officer of SCC, emphasized the importance of recognizing the hard work of municipal workers who keep Suva city clean.

This salary increase applies to both established and unestablished workers, and it is one of four new benefits being introduced by the SCC. Earlier, workers received a sick leave benefit before Christmas, and the salary adjustments will be implemented gradually: a two percent payout was observed on December 31, followed by a one percent increase on January 28, with the remaining two percent set to be disbursed by April 17.

Boseiwaqa also expressed gratitude to municipal workers who often spend extended periods away from home, noting that these salary increases aim to help employees achieve a better work-family balance.

In addition to salary increases, as of December 31, 2024, SCC has regularized all acting positions that have been held for longer than six months, transitioning these roles to tenured positions rather than contracts, with assessments to ensure ongoing performance monitoring.

This development signifies SCC’s commitment to supporting its workforce while enhancing job security and operational stability. It reflects a positive approach to employee welfare that could foster greater job satisfaction and productivity in the long run.

Summary: The Suva City Council has approved a five percent salary increase for all staff members, recognizing their hard work. The increase follows consultations and will be rolled out in stages. Additionally, acting positions within the council are being regularized, transitioning from contracts to tenureship, showcasing SCC’s commitment to employee welfare and job security.
