Suva City Council (SCC) employees with skill-based roles are now presented with an opportunity to upgrade their qualifications through a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) established with Pacific Polytech (PP).
SCC’s acting chief executive officer, Tevita Boseiwaqa, highlighted that this partnership aims to enhance the skills of staff members. “The majority of our staff engage in skill-based work and require this enhancement; over 200 employees will participate,” Mr. Boseiwaqa explained. He noted that this agreement encompasses approximately three-quarters of the workforce, emphasizing a multi-level and multi-skilled approach.
SCC plans to carry out a training needs analysis to pinpoint specific areas where employees can benefit from the MoU. Mr. Boseiwaqa added that this analysis will also identify staff requirements, ultimately aiming to broaden their skill sets. “Employees with multiple skills have a stronger growth platform compared to those specialized in a single area,” he stated.
Peni Taoi, founding director of Pacific Polytech, expressed enthusiasm for the agreement, noting that it aligns with similar agreements previously signed with the Labasa and Nasinu Town Councils. “Pacific Polytech focuses on technical skill development and provides upskilling opportunities in response to emerging needs,” Mr. Taoi remarked, adding that this MoU is the third of its kind for the council.
