The Suva City Council has announced a five percent salary increase for all of its employees, a decision reached after extensive consultations involving council members, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa.
Tevita Boseiwaqa, the special administrator chairperson and acting chief executive officer, emphasized the dedication of the workers in maintaining the cleanliness of Suva city. He expressed that their hard work deserved recognition and support. The decision followed thorough discussions with union representatives, staff, and department heads, underlining the council’s commitment to acknowledging the efforts of its workforce.
This pay increase will benefit both established and unestablished employees and is part of a broader strategy that includes other benefits. For instance, the council previously offered a sick leave benefit before Christmas. The salary adjustment will be distributed in stages, with a two percent payout having occurred on December 31, 2024, and subsequent payments scheduled for January 28 and before April 17, 2025.
Boseiwaqa also recognized the challenges faced by municipal workers, many of whom spend considerable time away from home, and stated that this pay increase aims to support a better work-life balance for them.
In addition to the salary increase, the council has regularized all acting positions as of December 31, 2024, particularly for individuals who have held these roles for over six months. This decision reflects the council’s strategy to foster a positive work environment and effective leadership. Positions below the CEO level will no longer be contract-based but shift to tenureship, with regular assessments to monitor progress.
In summary, the Suva City Council is taking significant steps to enhance employee welfare and job security, reflecting a commitment to nurturing a motivated workforce. This growth in staff benefits not only supports individual workers but also contributes to the overall health and success of the community they serve. Such initiatives are crucial in fostering morale and productivity, paving the way for a stronger, more resilient local government.
