The Suva City Council (SCC) has noted a positive trend, with an increasing number of taxpayers coming forward to settle their outstanding rate arrears or arrange payment plans. Acting CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa expressed appreciation for this encouraging public response, following the council’s persistent appeals for timely payments.
While this surge in payments is commendable, Mr. Boseiwaqa highlighted that the overall response still does not meet the council’s needs to significantly reduce its total pending arrears. He observed a noticeable uptick in ratepayers visiting the council’s office to address their financial obligations, emphasizing the importance of open communication.
Mr. Boseiwaqa encouraged individuals facing financial difficulties to come forward and discuss flexible installment options, fostering a collaborative relationship between the council and its constituents. He assured that the SCC prioritizes dialogue before considering more severe measures such as court actions or property seizures.
The council is currently managing approximately 11,000 ratepayers, with estimated arrears affecting 4,000 to 5,000 of them. Mr. Boseiwaqa underscored that consistent payments are crucial for maintaining the council’s ability to deliver essential services to the community.
He acknowledged that there are various legitimate reasons for delayed payments, including the acquisition of properties with existing debts and unforeseen financial hardships that disrupt retirement plans. Despite these challenges, the SCC remains dedicated to collaborating with ratepayers to achieve workable solutions.
Ultimately, Mr. Boseiwaqa reinforced the importance of ensuring payments, even if made in installments, as a beneficial arrangement for both the council and the ratepayers.
This development reflects a growing recognition among taxpayers of their responsibilities and the role of the council in fostering a supportive environment for compliance. By continuing to seek solutions and understanding, the SCC and its ratepayers may contribute to a healthier community capable of overcoming financial challenges together.
