The Suva City Council has officially approved a five percent salary increase for all its employees. This decision followed consultations among council members, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa.
Tevita Boseiwaqa, the special administrator and acting chief executive officer of the Council, highlighted the significant contributions of the workers in maintaining the cleanliness of Suva city. He emphasized that such dedication deserves recognition and that the salary increase serves as an acknowledgment of their hard work.
Boseiwaqa stated that a comprehensive consultation process involved the union, staff, and heads of departments before making the decision to implement the pay raise. This salary increase affects both established and unestablished staff and is one of four benefits being provided by the Council. Earlier, a sick leave benefit was announced before Christmas.
The salary adjustments will be disbursed in phases, with an initial payout of two percent already given on December 31, 2024. The second payout of one percent is scheduled for January 28, and the remaining two percent will be paid out before April 17.
In addition to the salary increase, Boseiwaqa announced that all acting positions within the council that have been held for over six months are now regularized as of December 31, 2024. This change aligns with the Council’s goal of establishing a healthy work environment and better leadership practices, with lower-level positions transitioning from contracts to tenureship. Regular assessments will be conducted to monitor progress.
Overall, this initiative reflects the Suva City Council’s commitment to improving the welfare of its employees and fostering a supportive work atmosphere.
This salary increase not only strengthens the financial well-being of the workers but also enhances job security and stability within the Council, leading to a more motivated workforce dedicated to the city’s upkeep and development.
