Suva City Council Faces Drug Crisis: Urgent Changes Required!

The Suva City Council is currently struggling to tackle the escalating issue of drug-related activities within the city. This concern was highlighted during the tabling of the SCC Consolidated Annual Reports for the years 2016 to 2018 in Parliament, where Social Affairs Committee chair Iliesa Vanawalu emphasized the need for the council to adopt a proactive approach to these pressing challenges.

Vanawalu pointed out that, in addition to fulfilling its core responsibilities, such as managing rates and serving ratepayers, the council is now confronted with additional hurdles, including drug-related issues, city security problems, and the presence of street dwellers. He advocated for an urgent review of the council’s functions and operational procedures to effectively address these serious social challenges.

Furthermore, Vanawalu urged that the Ministry of Local Government should play an active role in providing guidance and oversight to the Suva City Council, ensuring compliance and enhancing operational efficiencies. The committee’s findings indicated a significant gap, as there is currently no effective strategy or comprehensive plan in place to combat drug issues within the Suva municipality.

This call for action serves as a hopeful indicator that the city council and relevant authorities are becoming increasingly aware of the complexities of urban social issues and the necessity for a structured response. With collaborative efforts and strategic planning, there is potential for positive change in enhancing community safety and wellbeing in Suva.

In summary, the Suva City Council is urged to reassess its strategies and operations to effectively address drug-related activities and other social challenges facing the community. The involvement of the Ministry of Local Government may provide the necessary support to develop a more organized and powerful response to these pressing issues.
