The Suva City Council has implemented a five percent salary increase for all its employees, following discussions involving council members, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa. This decision reflects the council’s recognition of its workers’ efforts in maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of Suva city.
Tevita Boseiwaqa, the special administrator and acting chief executive officer of SCC, emphasized the importance of acknowledging the hard work of municipal employees. He stated that a comprehensive consultation process was undertaken, engaging the union, staff, and heads of departments, prior to making this significant decision.
The pay increase will apply uniformly to both established and unestablished staff and is one of four benefits that the SCC plans to implement. Earlier in the holiday season, a sick leave benefit was introduced, demonstrating the council’s commitment to its workforce. The first segment of the salary increase, amounting to two percent, was distributed on December 31, 2024, with the subsequent one percent scheduled for January 28 and the final two percent to be paid out before April 17.
Furthermore, Mr. Boseiwaqa acknowledged the sacrifices made by municipal workers, many of whom spend extended periods away from their families. He expressed that this pay increase aims to assist employees in balancing their work and family lives.
In a notable update, as of December 31, 2024, the SCC has regularized all acting positions held within the council, specifically for those in such roles for over six months. Mr. Boseiwaqa explained that this regularization aligns with the council’s strategy to foster a healthier work environment and leadership structure. Moving forward, all positions below the CEO level will transition from contracted roles to tenureship, with ongoing assessments to monitor progress.
This initiative positively showcases the Suva City Council’s dedication to its workforce, recognizing their contributions and supporting their well-being, which can lead to enhanced job satisfaction and productivity in the long run.
