Suva City Council Boosts Employee Salaries: What You Need to Know!

The Suva City Council has announced a five percent salary increase for all staff members, a move initiated after discussions involving council members, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa. Tevita Boseiwaqa, the special administrator and acting chief executive officer, expressed appreciation for the dedicated efforts of municipal workers in maintaining the cleanliness of Suva city.

Boseiwaqa underscored the importance of acknowledgment, stating that the workers who contribute significantly to the city’s upkeep deserved recognition for their hard work. A comprehensive consultation process was conducted with trade unions, staff, and department heads before finalizing this pay increase.

The salary adjustment will be applicable to both established and unestablished workers, and it is part of a broader set of benefits from the council. In addition to the salary increase, a sick leave benefit was granted before Christmas. The pay increase will be disbursed in installments, with a first payout of two percent occurring on the last day of 2024, followed by another one percent on January 28, and the final two percent scheduled for disbursement before April 17.

Boseiwaqa acknowledged the commitment of municipal workers, many of whom spend extended hours away from home, emphasizing that the pay increase is part of the council’s effort to support employees in striking a better work-life balance.

Furthermore, as of December 31, 2024, the council has regularized all acting positions held for more than six months, transitioning them from contracted roles to tenured positions. This shift aligns with the council’s strategy to foster a healthy working environment and effective leadership, with plans for ongoing assessments of these roles.

This decision reflects a growing recognition of the labor and sacrifices made by municipal employees. The initiatives taken by the Suva City Council aim not only to enhance employee morale and job security but also to ensure a more stable and committed workforce in the long run, which can greatly benefit the community as a whole.
