The Suva City Council has announced a five percent salary increase for all its staff members, a decision made following consultations with council members, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa. Tevita Boseiwaqa, the SCC’s special administrator and acting chief executive officer, emphasized the hard work of municipal employees in maintaining the cleanliness of Suva City, noting that their efforts deserved recognition.

Boseiwaqa explained that the pay increase applies to both established and non-established workers and is part of four benefits the Council is implementing. The first benefit, sick leave, was provided before Christmas. The salary increase will be rolled out in installments, with the first payout of two percent occurring on December 31, 2024, followed by a one percent payout on January 28 and the remaining two percent before April 17.

Additionally, the SCC has regularized all acting positions as of December 31, 2024, particularly for those who have held their roles for over six months. This move is part of the Council’s strategy to foster a healthier work environment. All positions below CEO level will now be held on a tenured basis rather than contracted.

This development signifies a positive commitment to improving staff morale and acknowledging the hard work of municipal employees. By implementing regularization and salary increases, the Suva City Council is not only enhancing its work environment but also promoting stability and recognition within its workforce. Such steps are essential for building a motivated team focused on serving the community effectively.
