The Suva Western Bus Stand is set to undergo a significant transformation after the demolition of 23 bean cart stalls that have been operational for over two decades. This redevelopment initiative is aimed at modernizing the space, with the intent to boost business opportunities for the vendors.
Stall owner Rakesh Kumar, who has managed a bean cart and juice stall for more than 20 years, has expressed support for the project following extensive discussions with the Suva City Council (SCC). Kumar stated, “We’ve been negotiating with the City Council for months. They’ve assured us that our spots will remain after the rebuild. It’s time to let go of the old structures and embrace new, modern models that will help grow our businesses.”
The SCC has highlighted hygiene concerns and reports of illicit activities as primary motivators for the redevelopment. The new stalls are designed to feature contemporary aesthetics resembling those at the Suva Municipal Market, promising a better business environment for vendors.
Another vendor, Filisita Sameke, who has been in the business for over ten years, has also welcomed the council’s proactive measures. She remarked, “For years, we worked in makeshift structures that were uncomfortable and inefficient. The council’s swift action will make our work easier and more appealing to customers.”
The revitalized stalls are anticipated to enhance the overall atmosphere of the bus stand, creating a safer and more hygienic environment for both vendors and customers. The project is expected to take about two to three months to complete, with developers assuring vendors that there will be minimal disruption during the process. Currently, vendors pay about $32.70 weekly for their spaces, and many believe that this investment will be beneficial in the long run.
This redevelopment marks a positive step towards improving local commerce and community infrastructure, fostering a healthier environment for both vendors and their patrons. The focus on modernization not only aims to enhance the aesthetics of the area but also prioritizes hygiene and safety—key factors in business success.
