The Suva Western Bus Stand is undergoing a significant transformation with the recent demolition of 23 bean cart stalls, many of which have operated for over two decades. This redevelopment represents the beginning of a long-awaited upgrade aimed at modernizing the area and enhancing opportunities for local vendors.
Rakesh Kumar, a stall owner who has been serving customers with his bean cart and juice stand for more than 20 years, expressed his support for this transformation, noting that extensive discussions with the Suva City Council (SCC) have taken place. “We’ve been negotiating with the City Council for months,” Kumar stated, adding that they have assured him and other vendors that their spots will be preserved after the reconstruction. He believes it is time to move away from older structures and adopt new, modern designs that will benefit their businesses.
The SCC has cited hygiene issues and reports of illicit activities as primary reasons for the redevelopment project. The new stalls will feature contemporary designs akin to those at the Suva Municipal Market, promoting a better business environment.
Filisita Sameke, another long-time vendor with over a decade in the trade, voiced her satisfaction with the SCC’s proactive measures. “For years, we worked in makeshift structures that were uncomfortable and inefficient,” she said, appreciating the council’s swift actions that promise to enhance both the vendor experience and customer appeal.
The redesigned stalls are expected to improve the overall atmosphere of the bus stand, creating a safer and more hygienic environment for both vendors and customers alike. Sec developers have assured vendors that the entire reconstruction process will take approximately two to three months, aiming for minimal disruption to their operations.
With vendors currently paying around $32.70 per week for their spaces, many believe this investment in modernization will yield significant returns in the long run.
This redevelopment is a hopeful step forward not only for the vendors who have relied on these stalls for their livelihood but also for the community, which stands to benefit from a cleaner, more vibrant marketplace. The changes promise to enhance the economic landscape of Suva, offering both improvements in business operations and customer experience.
