Operation Island Chief 2024 has successfully concluded after a 12-day initiative led by the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, which focused on monitoring and surveillance to promote sustainable fisheries in the Pacific region.
The operation involved the participation of FFA Members and the Pacific Quadrilateral Defence Coordination Group, covering an extensive area of 18.2 million square kilometers.
Significant outcomes from the operation included over 353 vessel contacts, 153 inspections, 206 aircraft sightings, and 1,146 satellite detections. Additionally, eight vessels were identified for potential non-compliance with conservation measures.
Thirteen FFA Members took part in the operation, utilizing remote sensing technology and cooperative surveillance efforts. Prior training was conducted, and various partners, including Starboard Maritime Intelligence and Canada’s Dark Vessel Detection program, supported the initiative.
