Taci Village, located in the Rewa province, stands as a notable example of sustainable living where its residents harness natural resources to strengthen their local economy. Families in Taci rely heavily on harvesting mud crabs, prawns, coconuts, and fish as primary income sources, with the Taci Women’s Association playing a crucial role in facilitating trade and market access.
According to Unaisi Wati, President of the Women’s Association, local women engage in harvesting during the week, with sales occurring at markets in Nausori and Suva on Fridays and Saturdays. “This is how we generate income for our families on a daily basis. We sometimes earn $60-$70 a week depending on what we sell. Our income is derived from fetching crabs, fish, and other marine resources, which is essential for our daily lives and helps us send our children to school. The proceeds also enable the villagers to meet community needs and support church activities, fostering unity among residents,” Wati stated.
However, the community faces challenges, particularly regarding financial resources for supporting children’s education. Despite these obstacles, Taci serves as an insightful model of how communities can leverage their natural resources not only to sustain livelihoods but also to promote development and cohesion among members.
This aligns with ongoing initiatives in other regions, such as the cooperative business models launched in the Kabara, Komo, and Namuka-i-Lau islands.
