In an impressive showcase of cultural and environmental pride, Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, representative of the Labasa Divisional Hospital, won the Best Sarong award at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North’s Global Night event.
The 22-year-old captivated attendees on Monday night at Subrail Park in Labasa with a sarong that told a story of organic farming. The garment, elegantly wrapped around her neck, represented the beginning of a journey anchored in sustainable agricultural practices.
Adi Marica’s unique presentation not only awarded her the top prize but also highlighted the importance of sustainable farming in an engaging way. A representative from the pathology department at Labasa Divisional Hospital noted that the knot in the sarong illustrated a strong commitment to nurturing the land and promoting sustainable agriculture.
“After a fulfilling day on the farm, the sarong can effortlessly transition to a chic beach attire with a knot below the bust,” Ms. Waqaniburotu explained. “It embodies relaxed sophistication, ideal for embracing the coastal breeze.”
She also shared that her headpiece, crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, symbolized the fruits and vegetables produced on the organic farm.
“I was overwhelmed with joy when I won the award; I almost cried because all the other contestants had stunning sarongs,” she remarked. “My sister and I made the sarong together, representing our sisterly unity, and it’s wonderful to see our hard work pay off.”
Adi Marica is currently in her final year at Fiji National University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. Originally from Makadru in Matuku, Lau, she has maternal connections to Taviya Village, Ovalau. Her advocacy centers around revitalizing the North through the promotion of organic farming.
“I believe that organic farming leads to a healthier and more sustainable future, and I am truly passionate about it,” she stated.
She is one of the nine contestants competing for the title of Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North on Saturday.
