Seven sailors from the Republic of Fiji Navy have been suspended without pay in connection with the docking incident of the RFNS Timo, which occurred on December 19. Commander Humphrey Tawake confirmed this news as investigations are ongoing.
The RFNS Timo, a vessel recently gifted by the Australian government to replace the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, experienced minor damage to its stern during a docking mishap at the Walu Bay Navy Pier last Thursday. The incident was reportedly influenced by adverse weather conditions, including gusty winds, and the restricted space available for docking due to nearby commercial vessels.
During the incident, some sailors were allegedly found to be intoxicated while on duty. Commodore Tawake stated that disciplinary processes had been initiated for those involved, and while they remain members of the navy, their suspension is a necessary step until the investigation concludes.
Additionally, Tawake indicated that they are seeking approval to dispose of the RFNS Puamau, which ran aground in June, and mentioned that the court martial process for the involved personnel is slated to start this month.
This incident highlights the importance of maintaining strict conduct within military ranks, especially regarding operational safety. It serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in maritime operations, and hopefully, the outcome of the investigations will lead to improved practices that enhance safety and accountability within the navy.
