The outcomes of the tribunal concerning suspended Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde will be disclosed once President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has reviewed the report and consulted with relevant authorities. This process is currently delayed due to the holiday breaks for some officials.

The report was submitted to the President on December 23, 2024. In a letter sent to the President’s office, Pryde has called for the public release of the report, referencing Section 112 (6) of the Constitution, which stipulates that such reports must be made public. He was appointed DPP in 2011 but was suspended on April 13, 2023, due to allegations of misbehavior after being seen with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. A tribunal was formed to investigate these claims, led by Justice Anare Tuilevuka, with Justices Chaitanya Lakshman and Samuela Qica serving as members.

In his letter, Pryde emphasizes his rights under the Constitution, arguing that if the report concludes there is insufficient evidence against him, he should be reinstated and compensated for the financial hardships caused by his lengthy suspension. He mentioned that it has been nearly 21 months since his suspension and nearly six months since his salary was halted.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka chose not to comment on the matter, stating it is outside his jurisdiction. The President’s office indicated that they would ensure the report is publicized as per constitutional requirements once the necessary reviews are completed after the New Year.

This situation highlights the importance of transparency in governance and the rule of law. It’s hopeful that a resolution will soon be reached, allowing for clarity and fairness in the DPP’s office and restoring Pryde’s standing if the tribunal’s findings support his claims.
