Daniel Whippy, the managing director of Carpenters Fiji Limited, has received permission to modify his bail conditions, enabling him to travel to Chennai, India, for knee surgery. This development comes amid legal proceedings where Whippy faces charges related to counseling the commission of an offense, alongside former National Fire Authority (NFA) chief executive officer John Masi O’Connor, who is charged with abuse of office.
During a recent appearance at the Suva Magistrate’s Court, Whippy’s lawyer, Suruj Sharma, addressed the court regarding the need for medical treatment. Initially, there was an application for a stem cell procedure in the United States, but complications and delays led to this new request for surgery in India. The court was informed that Whippy is scheduled to leave for India on January 30, with a recovery period of two weeks anticipated prior to his return on March 2.
FICAC attorney Lavinia Ravuikadavu did not oppose the travel for the medical procedure, indicating a degree of cooperation regarding Whippy’s health needs. Meanwhile, O’Connor has pleaded not guilty to his charges, which involve alleged manipulation of a Fire Investigation Report from April 2018 at the Morris Hedstrom warehouse, purportedly for personal gain. The case, intertwining issues of public service integrity and health needs, reflects ongoing legal scrutiny within Fiji.
The court has adjourned the cases to March 3 for Whippy’s return, signifying a pivotal moment in both personal health and legal standing as they navigate through these serious allegations. This situation illustrates the balance of justice with personal circumstances, as the legal proceedings continue to unfold.
