A recently released report from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has revealed alarming statistics regarding non-sexual violence offences as of November 2024. Among the reported cases, a 40-year-old man has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm to his 38-year-old wife. In a separate case, a 38-year-old man is facing similar charges against a 41-year-old woman.
The statistics also include a grave incident where a 49-year-old man was charged with intent to cause grievous harm after allegedly stabbing a victim in the back with scissors during an altercation. In a related case, a 41-year-old man was charged with assault with intent to cause grievous harm, but this case was discontinued due to the inability to contact the victim.
The report highlights various robbery and burglary incidents, including multiple break-ins at homes, shops, and garages. In one case, a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man were arrested for burglary and theft. Additionally, two men, aged 34 and 29, face charges for breaking into Tilak High School in Lautoka and causing extensive damage to school property. Two other 19-year-old men were charged with breaking into Kids First Kindergarten in Suva, where they stole various educational items and equipment.
Overall, there were 21 individuals charged with a total of 27 counts of non-sexual violence offences during the month. These counts include serious charges such as murder, aggravated robbery, burglary, and arson. Notably, out of the 21 accused, two were juveniles, and there were two incidents where the accused individuals had familial ties to their victims.
While the statistics raise serious concerns about the rising violence, it is essential to focus on community awareness and efforts to combat such issues. These incidents can serve as a call to action for community engagement initiatives aimed at addressing violence and supporting victims, which could lead to improved safety and stronger communal bonds.
In summary, these findings underscore the need for continued awareness and prevention efforts regarding violence within communities, with hopes that collaborative initiatives will foster a safer environment for all.
