The global situation regarding Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is improving, yet Fiji is experiencing a notable rise in cases. This was emphasized by Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, Fiji’s Minister for Health and Medical Services, during a parliamentary session on Wednesday.
In response to a question from Opposition MP Virendra Lal about the government’s actions to address the increase in HIV cases, particularly among youths and linked to drug use, Dr. Lalabalavu revealed concerning statistics. He noted that Fiji is projected to be the second fastest-growing country in HIV prevalence in the Asia-Pacific region, trailing only the Philippines.
The Minister highlighted the significant issue of injectable drug use in Fiji, citing that from January to June of this year, there were 552 reported cases of HIV, with 15 percent of those being injectable drug users. This marks a troubling milestone for the country.
To combat this growing crisis, the Ministry has started strengthening its response to HIV related to drug use. Efforts include enhancing HIV testing and treatment services throughout Fiji in a more decentralized approach. Additionally, the government has allocated $200,000 in the current financial year specifically for HIV response initiatives.
