In October, there was a concerning 39 percent rise in crimes against children, with a significant 64 percent of these incidents classified as sexual offenses. Assaults accounted for 28 percent, while the remaining 8 percent fell under other crime categories.
The police reported an overall six percent increase in crime for October compared to the same time last year, with serious crimes rising by 17 percent. Crimes against women also saw a slight uptick of 0.5 percent, and illicit drug cases surged by 13 percent. Notably, the data revealed that all perpetrators in 13 percent of domestic-related crimes involving children were male family members. The victims included 90 girls and 78 boys.
The Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, addressed the issue, emphasizing that the majority of these crimes occurred within domestic settings. He stated that the police would persist in collaborating with various stakeholders to tackle the underlying causes of these troubling trends. Serious crimes, particularly sexual offenses, increased by 32 percent, with a staggering 42 percent increase in domestic violence against women and children.
