Supporting Local Agriculture: A Push for Fiji Grown and Fiji Made.

As proud patriots, we must all make an effort to buy products featuring the “Fiji Grown” and “Fiji Made” logos of authenticity.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized this during the commissioning of the Fiji Rice Mill in Nailaga, Ba on Saturday.

He indicated that by purchasing these products, Fijians are supporting local farmers and communities.

“This strengthens our food security as a nation with the aim to become self-sufficient in terms of rice and other essentials of life and to reduce our annual import bill,” Mr. Rabuka said.

“Fiji Rice Ltd (FRL) is a 100 percent Government-owned entity which reports directly to the Ministry of Public Enterprises on its financial and non-financial performance.

“I am proud to note as Prime Minister that rice produced by Fiji Rice Ltd carries the ‘Fiji Grown’ logo.

“This branding reaffirms FRL’s commitment and ability to produce rice locally and it is something we should all be proud of.”

Mr. Rabuka also commended the Board of Fiji Rice for their efforts in revamping the industry and for convincing the government to introduce incentives for rice farmers and assistance with farm needs.

“The company increased its paddy buying capacity as well as its own crushing or milling capacity, which have reduced costs and resulted in increased sales.

“Government continues to provide a subsidy to support the company’s paddy-buying capacity.”

Mr. Rabuka mentioned that FRL previously owned and operated two rice mills in Nausori and Dreketi on Vanua Levu.

“However, in 2004, the Nausori Rice Mill ceased operations and only the Dreketi Mill remains in operation to date.

“Additionally, to supplement the current paddy supply from farmers and to meet the increasing demand for Fiji Rice, FRL is now engaged in commercial rice farming.”
