Leaders in the North have expressed their backing for their paramount chief, the Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as the next President of Fiji. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced Ratu Naiqama as the Government’s nominee for the position.
Tui Nadogo, Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, affirmed his support for the Government’s choice but emphasized the importance of including the chiefs in the decision-making process. He acknowledged the Government’s authority in the decision but argued that appointments should reflect the voice of the Great Council of Chiefs to ensure representation for the iTaukei people, who are the traditional custodians of the land.
Tui Wailevu, Ratu Joseva Maivalili, voiced his support for a presidential candidate who embodies justice and righteousness, though he remained neutral regarding the nomination of Ratu Naiqama. He expressed the need for a leader capable of unifying Fiji’s various districts and provinces, highlighting that the common people deserve a leader who promotes equality.
Ratu Maivalili praised the contributions of the current President of Fiji and Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, for his leadership over the past four years, wishing him well in his future endeavors.
He underscored the necessity for the next President to have a deep respect for God and uphold the principles of Christianity, which he believes are foundational to the nation. Regardless of the new President’s differing leadership style, Ratu Maivalili stated that they would honor him. “We need a visionary leader to take this nation forward with a stable style of leadership,” he added.
Attempts to reach the Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, for a response were unsuccessful.
