Former Social Democratic Liberal Party MP Tanya Waqanika has expressed her full support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s initiative to strengthen his backing in Parliament as he seeks to amend the 2013 Constitution. In statements made to FijiLive, Waqanika highlighted her belief in the Prime Minister’s political capabilities, affirming that he is “politically savvy” and understands the importance of rallying the necessary support to enact constitutional changes.

During a recent media briefing, Prime Minister Rabuka noted that his Coalition Government currently holds around 70 percent of the 55 parliamentary votes. This translates to 38 seats, although he acknowledged that this number falls short of the 75 percent majority required to amend the Constitution, which equates to needing an additional four votes to reach the 42 necessary for approval.

Rabuka articulated that pursuing a review and amendment of the Constitution is a primary objective for his administration. He intends to undertake this process in a manner consistent with democratic principles and aims to reflect the multi-ethnic and multicultural character of Fiji. The Prime Minister emphasized the necessity of ongoing dialogue and consensus-building across different communities, aiming to ensure that all voices within the nation are represented.

Despite the challenges inherent in gathering the votes needed for constitutional reform, Rabuka remains optimistic. He views these challenges as opportunities for engaging with a wide array of stakeholders, fostering a governance framework that truly reflects the aspirations of the Fijian people.

In summary, Waqanika’s endorsement signals a potentially positive development for the Prime Minister’s coalition government, hinting at the prospects for greater unity and collaboration in Fiji’s political landscape. This could ultimately lead to a more inclusive governance structure that meets the needs and aspirations of all Fijians, paving the way for a progressive future rooted in democracy and good governance.
