The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to Viliame Gavoka as Deputy Prime Minister, despite his recent resignation as the party’s leader. Viliame Takayawa, the party’s General Secretary, stated that the assignment of government roles is at the discretion of the Prime Minister, in line with the Coalition Agreement.
Takayawa asserted that it is appropriate for Gavoka to continue in his position, reflecting on his leadership during the 2022 national elections. He emphasised SODELPA’s ongoing dedication to ensuring an effective coalition, grounded in principles of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity. The party underscored the importance of collaboration with its coalition partners in fostering national unity, while advocating for indigenous rights and promoting a multicultural Fiji.
The structure of SODELPA’s governance is reinforced by its constitution, which clearly defines the roles of party and parliamentary leadership, ensuring equitable representation. Takayawa reiterated the party’s role in the founding of the current government and the commitment to uphold the mandate entrusted to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
As SODELPA prepares for the 2026 elections, it has reached out to the citizens of Fiji, inviting them to join its mission for stability and progress. “This is the leadership Fijians can trust – one that prioritizes the nation, seeks unity, and creates opportunities for every citizen,” Takayawa remarked, reflecting a hopeful outlook for a future aligned with the aspirations of the Fijian populace.
The commitment to reassure coalition stability and inclusivity bodes well for Fiji’s political landscape, suggesting that SODELPA’s ongoing support for Gavoka and collaborative efforts can pave the way for significant advancements in governance that benefit all citizens. As the nation navigates its complexities, the nurturing of trust and cooperation among coalition partners highlights a positive trajectory toward a unified and prosperous Fiji.
In summary, SODELPA’s reaffirmation of support for Gavoka and its collaborative stance encapsulate a shared vision of effective governance, embedding hope for a resilient political climate moving forward.
