Former Social Democratic Liberal Party MP Tanya Waqanika has publicly expressed her strong support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s initiative to expand his parliamentary backing in order to amend Fiji’s 2013 Constitution. Speaking to FijiLive, Waqanika praised Rabuka’s political insight, stating, “He knows what he is doing. He is politically savvy,” and noted that securing additional votes for constitutional changes is a necessary pursuit.

In a recent media briefing, Prime Minister Rabuka highlighted that his Coalition Government currently commands nearly 70 percent of the 55 parliamentary votes, translating to 38 seats. However, he acknowledged that an additional four votes are necessary to achieve the required 42 votes for a three-quarters majority needed for constitutional amendments, with the opposition currently holding 16 votes.

Rabuka emphasized the importance of reviewing and amending the Constitution to ensure it aligns with democratic principles and reflects Fiji’s diverse, multi-ethnic society. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to engaging various communities in dialogue and consensus-building for improved representation and inclusivity.

Waqanika’s endorsement of Rabuka’s efforts is viewed as a positive indication for the coalition government, suggesting the potential for greater unity and collaboration in Fiji’s political landscape. This commitment to dialogue and stakeholder engagement offers a hopeful outlook for constitutional reform, reflecting the aspirations of all Fijians.

In summary, while significant challenges lie ahead for constitutional amendments, the collaborative efforts of leaders like Rabuka and Waqanika provide a promising opportunity to foster a governance model that resonates with the diverse needs of Fiji’s population. Their proactive approach may pave the way for a more representative, inclusive, and harmonious political environment in Fiji.
