Discoloured meats have been discovered in the storage area of a supermarket in Labasa. Vakaruru Cavuilati, the Divisional North Health Inspector, announced that the supermarket has received a notice for failing to comply with food safety regulations.
This finding emerged during a routine health inspection conducted in collaboration with the local municipality. According to Mr. Cavuilati, improper storage temperature led to the discolouration of the meat.
The health officials removed the affected frozen products for laboratory testing to check for possible microbial growth. Mr. Cavuilati revealed that the supermarket’s freezer had been inactive for over two weeks.
The supermarket management reported that they intended to reopen their storage facility to install a fan, which they believe may have disrupted the circulation of cold air within the unit. As a precaution, no meat has been sold by the supermarket since its closure.
