The MV Sullivan, a vessel that sank in Suva Harbour in 2015, will remain at its current location due to a pending court case between Fiji Ports Ltd and the ship’s owner, Venu Shipping (Fiji) Ltd. Joeli Cawaki, the CEO of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), confirmed that discussions are ongoing with Ben Naidu, the managing director of Venu Shipping.
Cawaki noted that Fiji Ports is currently challenging Venu Shipping to remove the vessel, which lies within their operational boundary. He emphasized the importance of properly handling documentation during this process, as a legal review will ultimately determine accountability for the incident.
This situation may seem challenging, but it also highlights the importance of adhering to legal frameworks and establishing clear responsibilities. As the court case unfolds, it offers an opportunity for both parties to find a resolution that may prevent similar incidents in the future, ultimately contributing to safer maritime practices in Fiji.
In summary, the MV Sullivan will stay put for now as the court case continues, with both Fiji Ports and Venu Shipping working through the legal proceedings to clarify responsibilities regarding the vessel.
