The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a strong warning about the recent surge in intentional sugarcane field fires, labeling these actions as reckless and criminal.
Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the CEO of SRIF, pointed out the considerable harm these fires inflict, not only on farmers but also on the entire sugarcane industry. He underscored that setting sugarcane fields on fire deliberately is a criminal act that comes with serious consequences.
“These fires are not just reckless; they are criminal acts that carry serious consequences,” Dr. Kumar remarked. He noted that SRIF has endured significant losses in critical research data due to these events.
This data, accumulated over months or years, plays a vital role in fostering evidence-based advancements in the sugarcane sector. Dr. Kumar cautioned that a single instance of arson could obliterate invaluable research in moments, hindering progress and adversely affecting the industry’s future.
He urged the public to recognize the seriousness of the situation, highlighting that arson not only threatens the financial stability of farmers but also endangers the scientific research essential for the industry’s sustainability and growth.
The SRIF has appealed to the community to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the proper authorities. “By working together, we can protect our sugarcane fields, preserve vital research, and ensure the continued prosperity of our industry,” he added.
